How the chord identifier works

ToneAnvil compares the selected pitch classes against common chord formulas in 12-tone equal temperament. Because the same notes can describe more than one harmony, alternate interpretations are shown instead of forcing a single answer.

About inversions and slash chords

Choose a bass note from the selected notes. When the bass differs from the identified root, ToneAnvil writes the result as a slash chord, such as C/E or Am7/G.
