Load a MIDI riff, bassline or melody and generate controlled variations without throwing away the identity of the original phrase. Lock rhythm, pitch or velocity, mutate what you want, edit the result and export it.

How controlled mutation works
Every generated variation starts from the imported notes. The global strength sets the ceiling, while pitch, rhythm, velocity and length controls decide how much each dimension can move. Locks completely freeze selected dimensions. With Scale-Aware Pitch enabled, mutated pitches are snapped to the selected key and scale.
Transformations vs random mutation
Generate Variation is seed-based and probabilistic. The transformation buttons are deterministic operations applied to the current variation: pitch inversion mirrors intervals around the phrase center, retrograde reverses note order in time, rotate shifts the rhythmic pattern around the phrase length, and humanize adds small timing and velocity deviations.
What is preserved on import
ToneAnvil focuses on note data. It reads note events and the first detected tempo, but does not preserve controller automation, program changes, SysEx, lyrics or complex multi-tempo maps. Export is a new format-0 note-focused MIDI file.
