How note frequency is calculated

In 12-tone equal temperament, each semitone changes frequency by the twelfth root of two. A4 is normally 440 Hz, but you can change the reference for alternate or historical tuning.

What the cents value means

A cent is one hundredth of a semitone. A positive value means the entered frequency is sharp of the nearest equal-tempered note; a negative value means it is flat.
